Take-Two Interactive has finally addressed the status of the long-dormant NFL 2K series, with CEO Strauss Zelnick confirming that the planned revival "didn't work out creatively." The admission comes more than six years after the company announced a multi-game partnership with the NFL and the NFL Players Association in 2020, a deal that sparked hopes of a return for the beloved football franchise.
Speaking in a recent interview, Zelnick explained that while the company was initially excited about bringing NFL 2K back, the development process simply did not produce a product that met their standards. "We took a swing at it, and it just didn't work out creatively," he said. He emphasized that Take-Two is not interested in releasing a game just to compete with EA's Madden NFL series, but rather wants to deliver something unique and high-quality.
Despite the setback, Zelnick left the door open for future attempts. He described the company as "open-minded" about revisiting the NFL license down the road, but only if the right creative vision and development team come together. For now, fans hoping for a return of the classic arcade-style football experience will have to wait, as Take-Two focuses on its other major sports franchises like NBA 2K and the newly acquired WWE 2K series.
