'EA College Football 27': Road to Glory review

The latest entry in the college football simulation series, "EA College Football 27," brings back the Road to Glory mode with a familiar mix of promise and frustration. For those who missed the era of creating a high school phenom and guiding them through four years of collegiate chaos, the mode delivers on nostalgia. You pick your recruit's background, choose a school, and then grind through practices, classes, and games. The problem is that the grind has not gotten any smoother.

The core loop remains a chore. Between games, you are forced to attend "training reps" that feel more like busywork than meaningful progression. The mini-games for drills are repetitive and lack the polish seen in the main on-field action. Worse, the off-field drama, like managing your player's social media presence or dealing with a coach's trust meter, often punishes you for outcomes you cannot control. A bad game can tank your draft stock, and the comeback mechanics feel arbitrary.

On the field, the gameplay is solid when you are the star quarterback or running back. But the mode forces you into a rigid archetype system. If you pick a scrambling QB, you are locked into plays that ignore your arm strength. The AI teammates are still unreliable, dropping passes or missing blocks at the worst moments. It creates a disconnect where you feel like a superstar only when the script allows it. For all its ambition, "CFB 27" still cannot escape the feeling that you are playing a guided tour, not a true career. The quintessential experience is there, but it is buried under layers of annoying, repetitive design.
