Bringing the visceral, comic-book world of "Invincible" to life in a fighting game was a unique challenge for art director Dan Eder and his team. The goal was to create a visual style that felt authentic to the source material while functioning perfectly within the fast-paced, competitive framework of a fighter.
Eder explains that the primary inspiration was the dynamic, ink-and-paper aesthetic of the original comic books, rather than the animated series. This meant emphasizing bold outlines, impactful motion lines, and a color palette that popped with a traditional print feel. Every punch and super move needed to carry the weight and consequence the series is known for, translating its iconic, sometimes brutal, storytelling into immediate visual feedback.
When asked about the toughest character to design, Eder pointed to Allen the Alien. Capturing his deceptively simple, rounded design in a way that conveyed both his friendly demeanor and immense, universe-level power required careful iteration to ensure his moves felt powerful and his silhouette remained readable during intense combat.
Collaboration with the series creators, Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, was crucial. Their feedback ensured every character’s abilities and visual effects remained true to their comic book counterparts. This partnership was key in striking the delicate balance between creating a compelling competitive game and a faithful, loving tribute to the "Invincible" universe that fans would instantly recognize.
