Human Fall Flat creator looks back on a defining decade

A decade ago, Tomas Sakalauskas was tinkering with a small physics-based game in his spare time. He never expected it to become a global phenomenon. Today, "Human Fall Flat" has been played by over 60 million people, a staggering milestone for a project that started as a solo experiment. Looking back, Sakalauskas says the journey taught him more than just how to code a wobbly character.

The game's appeal lies in its simplicity. Players control a floppy human figure solving puzzles by grabbing, climbing, and often falling. It is a formula that resonated far beyond Sakalauskas's home country of Lithuania. He admits the early years were a blur of long nights and constant problem-solving. The biggest lesson, he says, was learning to let go. He had to trust other developers to expand the game while he focused on the core feel of the physics. That was harder than building the game itself.

Sakalauskas also learned that success does not always come from a grand plan. "Human Fall Flat" grew through word of mouth and player creativity. People shared videos of their clumsy characters, and the community became the game's best marketing team. He notes that the game's longevity came from staying true to its original, silly spirit. As he looks to the future, he carries that lesson forward. The next decade, he says, will be about making games that feel just as personal and honest as the one that started it all.
