The Nintendo 64 has officially crossed the three decade mark. While the system first appeared in Japan on June 23, 1996, players in other regions had to wait a bit longer. North American shelves did not see the console until September of that year. That staggered release schedule meant the anniversary arrives at different times depending on where you lived, which is a strange thing to consider now.
The console itself was a turning point for home gaming. It pushed 3D worlds into the mainstream with titles that defined a generation. Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time set new standards for movement and exploration. The controller introduced an analog stick and a rumble pack, changes that stuck around long after the hardware faded.
Three decades later, the machine still holds a firm place in memory. Collectors hunt for cartridges. Emulation keeps the library alive. And those who were there at launch now find themselves doing the math on their own age. The N64 turned 30. For many fans, that number lands a little differently.
