The UK Research and Innovation body has opened a new £5 million funding call aimed at researchers exploring the blurred lines between video games and gambling. The initiative, titled "Opportunity profile: Debugging virtual games of real-world harms," seeks to understand how gaming mechanics may contribute to harmful behaviors traditionally associated with gambling.

The fund will support projects that investigate features like loot boxes, in-game currencies, and reward systems that mimic slot machines or betting mechanics. Researchers are encouraged to examine the psychological and social impacts on players, particularly younger audiences who may be exposed to these systems without the same regulatory safeguards that apply to casinos or betting shops.

UKRI officials noted that the gaming industry has grown rapidly, and with it, concerns about "simulated gambling" elements becoming normalized. The call specifically targets interdisciplinary teams, including psychologists, data scientists, and game designers, to develop evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and developers.

Applications are expected to propose practical solutions, such as better age verification, transparency in odds disclosure, or design changes that reduce harm. The funding is part of a broader push to address digital harms while supporting innovation in the gaming sector. The deadline for submissions is set for late autumn, with projects expected to run for up to three years.
