While most developers are reportedly terrified at the prospect of making Baldur's Gate 4, one studio is actually interested. Owlcat Games, the team behind Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and the Pathfinder series, has said they would consider taking on the project as a "great challenge."
The studio's creative director admitted that following up Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 would be daunting. That game set a new standard for the genre, winning countless awards and selling millions of copies. Many developers have openly said they would avoid the project because expectations are impossibly high.
"We are a little bit masochistic," the director said, explaining why Owlcat would not run away from the job. However, they made it clear that simply copying what Larian did would be a mistake. Any new Baldur's Gate game would need to find its own identity rather than trying to recreate the magic of the third entry.
Owlcat has experience with complex RPGs. Their Pathfinder games and Rogue Trader all feature deep systems, branching stories, and tactical combat. They know how to handle licensed properties and large-scale narratives.
For now, no official announcement has been made about who will develop Baldur's Gate 4. Larian has moved on to other projects. But if the job ever opens up, at least one studio seems willing to step into the ring.
