Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill has a different take on the current state of the video game industry. While many developers and publishers point to market saturation or economic pressure as reasons for recent studio closures and layoffs, Merrill argues the real issue is simpler: players are tired of being offered the same thing over and over.
In a recent interview, Merrill said the industry is not collapsing. Instead, he believes players are actively correcting it. He described a growing sentiment among gamers who are tired of the relentless push toward live-service models, battle passes, and always-online experiences. According to Merrill, the message from the community is clear: "We don't want this stuff."
He suggests that many companies have chased trends rather than listening to what players actually enjoy. That has led to a market flooded with games designed to extract ongoing payments instead of delivering a satisfying, complete experience at launch. When those titles fail to find an audience, the blame often lands on external factors, but Merrill thinks the real problem is a disconnect between what studios build and what players truly want.
Merrill's comments come at a time when several high-profile live-service games have struggled or shut down shortly after release. Meanwhile, single-player, story-driven titles continue to perform well, which supports his point. He is not predicting doom for the industry, but rather a shift back toward fundamentals: making good games that respect the player's time and money. If studios ignore that, he warns, the correction will only get harsher.
