Rockstar Reveals What GTA 6 Mods Won't Be Allowed to Do

Rockstar has published a fresh set of modding guidelines that will shape what creators can and cannot do with GTA 6 and its other titles. The policy covers story content, monetization, and several other areas, giving the modding community a clearer picture of the limits ahead of the game's launch.

Under the new rules, mods that alter or extend the main story in ways that conflict with Rockstar's official narrative are off limits. Projects that let players sell in-game content, charge for access, or otherwise turn a mod into a commercial product are also banned. The guidelines extend to assets pulled from other games, meaning creators cannot import copyrighted material from unrelated titles without permission.

Rockstar says the goal is to protect both its intellectual property and the players who enjoy fan-made content. The company has historically taken a relaxed approach to single-player mods while cracking down on anything that interferes with its online services. The new document appears to formalize that stance rather than change it outright.

Reactions among modders have been mixed. Some see the rules as reasonable housekeeping, while others worry the language is broad enough to chill ambitious projects. Rockstar has not said how strictly it plans to enforce the guidelines or what penalties violators might face. For now, creators are left to read the fine print and decide how far they are willing to push.
