Targeted school intervention outperforms media lessons for teens at risk of gaming disorder

New research suggests that targeted, in-school programs do a better job of curbing problematic gaming habits in teenagers than broader media-based awareness lessons. The study compared two common prevention approaches and found that a structured, interactive intervention delivered directly in classrooms had a stronger impact on high-risk students.

The findings challenge the assumption that simply teaching teens about the dangers of excessive screen time is enough. Instead, the more effective method involved small group sessions, practical coping strategies, and direct engagement with students who already showed early signs of compulsive gaming. These sessions focused on building self-regulation, setting time limits, and finding alternative leisure activities.

Media lessons, by contrast, often rely on passive information delivery. While they can raise general awareness, they appear to miss the deeper behavioral patterns that drive addiction. Researchers noted that teens who already struggled with impulse control or social anxiety were less likely to change their habits after watching videos or reading articles about gaming risks.

The study's authors argue that prevention efforts should shift toward personalized, skill-based training within the school environment. They also emphasize that not all gaming is harmful, and the goal is not to demonize the hobby but to help young people maintain balance. The next step, they say, is to train teachers and counselors to identify at-risk students early and offer them targeted support before the problem escalates.
