The State of Games: February 2026

The State of Games: February 2026

The video game landscape faced significant headwinds in February 2026, with widespread declines in player engagement and revenue across major PC, console, and mobile titles. While a few notable exceptions provided bright spots, the overall trend pointed to a difficult period for many established franchises.

The month was unequivocally dominated by Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem, which shattered franchise records to top the sales charts. Beyond this horror hit, however, the story was largely one of contraction. Major staples including Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto, and Battlefield all experienced player drops. Notably, Nexon's Arc Raiders saw a dramatic reversal of fortune, ending a four-month growth streak with a loss of 2.4 million players compared to January.

Despite the broader downturn, several areas demonstrated resilience. The subscription model for games saw a notable surge in popularity across the United States. PUBG Mobile posted substantial growth, while Helldivers 2 and Overwatch successfully staged comebacks, attracting returning players. These successes highlight a shifting and competitive market where player attention is increasingly selective. The data from February underscores an industry in flux, where new hits can dominate while even the most popular live-service games face constant challenges in maintaining their audience.
