Video Game History Foundation on Sony's Digital-Only Shift

Video Game History Foundation on Sony's Digital-Only Shift

The Video Game History Foundation has voiced serious concerns about Sony's recent move toward a digital-only PlayStation ecosystem, warning that the shift could create major obstacles for game preservation. In a new statement, the nonprofit organization highlighted the growing difficulty of legally archiving video games as physical media continues to fade.

According to the foundation, the problem goes beyond simply losing access to discs. When a console relies entirely on digital downloads, the games become tied to online storefronts and server authentication. Once those services shut down, entire libraries of software can become unplayable. The group pointed out that current copyright laws and licensing agreements often block researchers and archivists from making backup copies or transferring games to new platforms.

Sony's recent announcements, including the removal of physical disc drives from some console models and a stronger push for digital sales, have accelerated this trend. While the company argues that digital distribution is more convenient and cost-effective, the foundation warns that it also gives publishers total control over access. If a game is delisted or a storefront closes, there may be no legal way to ever play it again.

The organization is calling for clearer legal exemptions that allow preservationists to archive digital games without facing copyright infringement claims. Without such changes, they argue, future generations could lose access to a significant portion of gaming history. The foundation also urged Sony to consider long-term archival solutions, such as offline-compatible downloads or partnerships with preservation groups, before committing fully to a digital-only model.
