The cost of video games and gaming hardware is climbing fast, and for a growing number of Americans, the culprit isn't just corporate greed. It's a mix of lingering economic policy and the disruptive force of artificial intelligence. Console prices, in particular, are becoming a clear, everyday signal of inflation-one that hits a key voting bloc especially hard: younger men.
Since the last major console generation launched, the price of a new PlayStation or Xbox has jumped by as much as 50 to 100 dollars in some regions. Used game prices are also up, and subscription services like Game Pass have quietly raised their monthly fees. For many, this feels like a tax on a primary form of entertainment. But the reasons behind the spike are more complex than simple market demand.
Some analysts point to the inflationary effects of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration, which raised the cost of imported electronics. Those supply chain pressures never fully unwound. Now, a new factor is adding fuel to the fire: AI. The same chips and advanced manufacturing capacity needed to build high-end graphics cards and consoles are being snapped up by AI data centers. This competition for silicon has driven up production costs, which are passed directly to the consumer.
For young voters, especially men under 35, this isn't an abstract economic statistic. It's a real-world pinch on a hobby that used to be relatively affordable. As the 2024 election cycle heats up, the rising price of a digital escape is becoming a tangible, frustrating symbol of a broader economic squeeze.
