A panel of industry leaders has delivered a grim assessment of the current state of video games, with one top executive calling it the worst downturn in four decades. Speaking at a recent conference, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney did not hold back, saying the sector is experiencing what he described as the most severe crash since the 1980s.

Sweeney pointed to a combination of factors behind the slump. Rising development costs, a post-pandemic drop in player engagement, and a sharp pullback in investor money have all hit studios hard. He noted that many companies expanded too quickly during the boom years, and now they are paying the price with layoffs, studio closures, and canceled projects.

The comments came during a broader discussion with other executives who agreed that the industry is in a painful adjustment phase. They said that while the long-term outlook for gaming remains strong, the next year or two will likely be rough. Smaller studios are especially vulnerable, as they lack the financial cushion of larger publishers.

Sweeney also criticized the industry's reliance on live service models and free-to-play mechanics, arguing that too many companies chased short-term trends instead of building sustainable games. He urged developers to focus on quality and innovation rather than copying whatever is currently popular.

Despite the bleak tone, there was a sliver of optimism. The executives noted that past downturns eventually led to a creative renaissance, as weaker players were filtered out and stronger ideas rose to the surface. But for now, they warned, the industry should brace for more pain before things get better.
