After an hour with Stranger Than Heaven’s combat, veteran Yakuza fans are in for a shock

RGG Studio has built a reputation on a specific kind of combat. The heat actions, the street brawling, the weighty punches that feel like they have real impact. But their upcoming title, Stranger Than Heaven, is already proving to be a different beast entirely. Early impressions from a one-hour hands-on session suggest that veteran Yakuza fans are in for a genuine shock.

The core of the change is speed. Where the classic Yakuza games rewarded patience and positioning, Stranger Than Heaven demands aggression and reflexes. The demo showed a much faster pace, with enemies rushing in from all sides and attacks that require quick dodges rather than careful blocks. The familiar heat gauge is gone, replaced by a resource system that feels closer to a character action game. You build meter by landing combos, then spend it on flashy, high-damage finishers that lack the grounded, cinematic brutality of the old series.

This is not a simple evolution. It is a deliberate break. The new protagonist moves with a fluidity that series veterans might find jarring at first. There is no time to stand still and survey the environment. The game pushes you forward, forcing you to chain attacks and manage your spacing constantly. The demo ended with a boss fight that felt less like a Yakuza standoff and more like a duel from a fighting game, complete with parries and counter windows.

For long-time fans, this will be the first real test. The shift away from the signature brawler feel is a huge risk. Whether this new, frantic energy can capture the same magic remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: RGG is not playing it safe.
