A proposed California law that aimed to force game publishers to keep online titles playable has failed to advance in the state Senate. The bill, which would have required companies to preserve online functionality for games they sell, was voted down in committee this week, effectively killing the measure for the current legislative session.
The legislation was part of a broader "Stop Killing Games" push that has gained traction in recent years. Supporters argued that when a publisher shuts down the servers for a game, they are effectively destroying a product that consumers paid for. The bill would have mandated that companies either keep the game running or release a patch to allow offline play. Critics, including major industry trade groups, countered that the law would be unenforceable, costly for developers, and could set a dangerous precedent for how digital goods are managed after sale.
The committee vote was close, but the bill ultimately failed to secure enough support to move to the full Senate floor. Advocates for the measure expressed disappointment, noting that the issue of game preservation is not going away. They pointed to recent high-profile server shutdowns that have rendered beloved multiplayer titles unplayable, leaving players with nothing but a library of dead software. For now, California will not be the first state to force game companies to keep the lights on, but the debate over digital ownership and planned obsolescence in gaming is far from over.
