Capcom just gave fans a reason to sharpen their blades early. The long-awaited samurai action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword will now launch on September 4, months ahead of its original window. The move is a smart dodge of the massive traffic jam expected later this year when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally hits shelves.
For anyone who missed the Summer Game Fest reveal, this is the return of a classic Capcom franchise that mixes historical Japan with demonic horror. You play as a lone swordsman who can absorb the souls of fallen enemies to power up his weapons. The combat is deliberate and brutal, not a mindless hack-and-slash. Each swing has weight, and every enemy encounter forces you to think about positioning and timing.
The new date puts Onimusha in a quiet spot on the calendar. September is usually a slow month for big releases, which means the game will get attention it might not have found in a crowded holiday season. Capcom is betting that players hungry for a single-player action game with style and difficulty will show up before the open-world juggernaut of GTA 6 eats all the air in the room.
Early previews highlight the game's dense atmosphere and tight level design. The team behind the new Resident Evil remakes is involved, and you can feel that same attention to detail in the environments and enemy animations. If you enjoyed Sekiro or Nioh but want something more focused and less punishing, this might be your next obsession.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword arrives on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 4. No word on a demo yet, but with the date moved up, expect more gameplay footage soon.
