Five Arcade Classics From 1986 That Are Still Worth Playing

The mid-1980s were a remarkable period for arcade gaming, and 1986 produced a string of releases that have aged far better than many of their contemporaries. While countless cabinets from that era have faded into obscurity, a handful of titles remain genuinely playable today, whether through modern re-releases or original hardware.

Out Run stands out as a landmark racing game, with its branching routes and smooth sprite scaling giving players a sense of speed that still feels impressive. Bubble Bobble remains one of the best two-player cooperative experiences ever made, combining simple mechanics with surprising depth across its many levels. Rampage lets players stomp through cities as giant monsters, and its pick-up-and-play appeal has kept it relevant for decades. Gauntlet continued to define the dungeon crawler formula, rewarding teamwork and careful resource management. Finally, Arkanoid refined the brick-breaking genre with power-ups and precise controls that make it easy to return to.

What these games share is tight design. Their rules are easy to learn, their challenges are fair, and their replay value comes from skill rather than spectacle. That combination is why they continue to attract new players, even as the arcades that housed them have largely disappeared.
