The Entertainment Software Association's latest annual report confirms that video games have moved far beyond their old "nerdy" image. Released alongside market research firm YouGov, the 2026 Essential Facts About the U.S. Video Game Industry study reveals that 212 million Americans now play video games on a weekly basis. That number represents roughly 63 percent of the total U.S. population, a steady climb from previous years.
The report highlights a broad demographic shift. The average player is now 36 years old, and nearly as many women play as men. About 76 percent of players are over the age of 18, which challenges the outdated stereotype of gaming as a pastime for children and teenagers. Mobile gaming continues to drive much of this growth, with smartphones being the most common device for play, followed by consoles and PCs.
Beyond just playing, the study notes that Americans spend an average of 14 hours per week on gaming activities. Social connection remains a major factor, with 72 percent of players saying they play with others at least some of the time. The ESA also points to the economic impact, estimating that the industry supports over 140,000 jobs across the country. As gaming becomes more embedded in daily life, the report suggests it is no longer a niche hobby but a mainstream form of entertainment and social interaction.
