Sony has made it clear for years that buying a digital game on PlayStation does not mean you own it. You are purchasing a license to play it, and that license can be revoked. As the company pushes further into an all-digital future with disc-less consoles and subscription services, this distinction is becoming impossible to ignore.
The issue resurfaced recently when users noticed that certain purchased titles were being removed from their libraries without warning. Sony's terms of service have always stated that digital purchases are revocable licenses, but many players assumed that was just legal language. Now, with the company shutting down storefronts for older consoles and delisting games, the reality is hitting home. If Sony decides a game should no longer be available, your "purchase" can disappear.
This is not just about convenience. It is about control. Physical discs can be traded, sold, or played offline. Digital libraries are tied to an account that Sony can suspend or terminate. As the industry shifts toward streaming and digital-only models, gamers are losing the ability to truly own the media they buy. Sony's message is clear: you are renting access, not buying a product. For anyone who values ownership, that is a hard pill to swallow.
